Help Support Unhoused People through My Brother’s Keeper

My Brother’s Keeper is a project of our neighbors at the Athens United Methodist Church. The group provides sleeping bags, clothing, and other personal items to people who are unhoused.

The following message is from the coordinator, Gloria Riegel:

My Brother’s Keeper includes clothing in each sleeping bag we make. We appreciate donations of the following:
– socks
– scarves
– hats
– mittens
– toiletries (“trial” sizes) and other small personal items

We also welcome donations of men’s sweatshirts, sweaters, flannel shirts or chamois shirts in sizes M, L, and XL (nothing larger than XL, please).

Unfortunately, we can no longer accept any clothing other than what is listed above. Here are some outlets which will accept other clothing items:

Red Door Gift Shop 359 Broad St Waverly, NY
North Waverly Chapel Waverly, NY. There are drop-off areas behind the church and in the parking lot shed.
Nichols NY Catholic Charities – call to find out where clothing can be dropped off.
Salvation Army food pantry Fulton St South Waverly, PA
Hearts for the Homeless has several large red metal collection bins in the Elmira area, including one at Notre Dame H. S. All locations are on their website. Donations fund their pop up food pantries, soup kitchens and other homeless issues.

WE ARE HAVING AN OPEN HOUSE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD DURING OUR REGULAR WORK TIME 9:30 – 12:00 AT THE METHODIST CHURCH 118 S. MAIN ST, ATHENS,PA. Come see us in action – see how the sleeping bags and blankets are made.

Please consider volunteering with My Brother’s Keeper. There are no attendance or quota requirements; the only skill needed is tying a knot. Enjoy the laughter and camaraderie while your hands are doing good. AS A BONUS,WE ARE GIVING AWAY (FREE) FABRIC! We will also have select items for sale at bargain prices.

Again, many thanks for all you have contributed over 32 years.
