Back in April we had a conversation about what we might do with the $19,000 we received from the sale of our Sheshequin meeting house. We identified a number of specific organizations as well as some general types of organizations and activities that we would like to support. Your Board of Trustees spent some time at our meeting last week considering the ideas presented in April. Here’s what we came up with: · Rather than just sending a check, we would like to develop a relationship with any group that we choose to support. We propose inviting representatives from these groups to come and talk to us, either during a worship service or afterwards during social time, so we can get to know their organization and what their needs are. We would advertise these presentations locally as a way of raising community awareness of our church’s values. · We proposed hosting 3-4 speakers during this church year and to continue bringing in speakers in the coming years. · We did not propose a number or amount of donations to be made. · We agreed to invest the proceeds with the Pennsylvania Universalist Convention to maximize the fund’s growth. We need your help to reach out to the proposed recipients and invite a representative to come talk to us. The Board and Worship team will coordinate scheduling, but we would like members of the congregation to make the contact. If there is an organization not on the list below that you would like us to support and that exemplifies our UU values and that you are willing to contact, let us know! Here’s what you need to do: · Let the Board know which organization you will work with. · Contact the organization and invite them to send a speaker to tell us about their organization. Let them know that the speaker could address the congregation during a Sunday morning worship service (about 15 minutes) and/or during social time after the service (with Q&A). We will provide an honorarium for the speaker. Ask about any scheduling limitations over the next 9 months. · Let the Board know what you found out. The Board or Worship team will propose a date(s). · Contact the organization to confirm the proposed date(s). · Host the speaker when they come. Proposed recipients of donations or other uses of funds from April 2024: · Indigenous group · Advertising campaigns; marketing campaign for the church · Food pantries, community meals · Catholic Charities of Chemung County – food pantry and shelter · GLBTQ groups · Organizations addressing food insecurity · Bradford County Humane Society · Carantouan Greenway · Tioga Point Museum to fund repatriating Indian artifacts and remains of Indigenous people · Big Brothers/Big Sisters · Democracy engagements · Project Grow – community garden and education |
